BIOVYN™- Natural PVC Without Fossil (Oil)!

BIOVYN™ is an exciting new natural and eco-friendly PVC produced from non-fossil wood based pulp waste and so contains no fossil derived oil. It has the same properties as oil based PVC including a 100 year life.
Sustainability in action and Pappelina are unique in using BIOVYN™ to launch their stunning new Vera 2.0 range of rugs.

Coniferous Pine Tree Forest

Pappelina Launch New & Unique Vera 2.0 BIOVYN™ Rug

The Vera design is one of Pappelina’s oldest and bestselling designs, a classic you might say. Now they have taken that classic and recreated it using the world’s first bio-attributed PVC.
Usually PVC is produced using oil which, of course, is fossil based.
BIOVYN™ PVC contains no fossil derived oil at all instead it is made from Tall Oil, also known liquid rosin or as tallol (derived from the Swedish word talloja meaning pine tree).
Tall Oil is obtained as a by-product of the kraft process of wood pulp manufacture when pulping mainly coniferous trees.

The really exciting breakthrough is that BIOVYN™ PVC retains all the super properties of oil based PVC and will last a lifetime but the really big pluses are:

(1) It does not further deplete our planet of fossil based material
(2) It is totally natural, comes from a fully sustainable source with no waste
(3) It does not compete with the human or animal food chain
(4) It is fully recyclable
(5) It delivers a carbon footprint reduction of over 90%

Tall Oil – Safe For Our Planet

Tall Oil Resin

Tall Oil is a resinous oily liquid composed of a mixture of rosin (or resin) acids and fatty acids obtained as a byproduct in the treatment of pine pulp and is already widely used in soaps, emulsions, and lubricants. It is a completely natural occurring resin that is derived from coniferous trees such as pine and spruce. BIOVYN™ demonstrates that it is possible to substitute the use of virgin fossil feedstocks without compromising the unique product qualities such as durability, flexibility and recyclability that make (oil based) PVC one of the most widely used, sustainable plastics in the world.
The source of BIOVYN™ is from natural coniferous forests which are managed professionally to ensure the trees growing there are healthy, looked after and regularly harvested and replanted. The trees that are cut down during this managed process are then turned into pulp from which Tall Oil is taken and turned eventually into BIOVYN™ PVC which is then woven by Pappelina into amazing, stylish, sustainable rugs for your home, garden or place of work – truly a world first!

Pappelina Still Weave Rugs in the Traditional Way

Pappelina Rug Making on a Jacquard Machine

To this day Pappelina weave all their rugs on original, over 100 year old, Jacquard machines and then every single one is inspected by hand and the naked eye. A combination of tradition and craftsmanship that means, looked after, a Pappelina rug will last a lifetime and beyond.

The Vera 2.0 Design

Pappelina Vera 2.0 Rug in Charcoal

Pappelina Vera Design

The Pappelina Vera design was one of Pappelina’s first designs originally launched some 20 years ago and, since then, it has remained at the top of the bestsellers list. The first Vera rugs were solid, bright, colours with a white circle design. Pappelina have now taken this classic, winning design, to create the first ever range of BIOVYN™ based PVC rugs in the world!
They have softened the design for this special launch and now combine more subtle and sophisticated colours into design, one colour always being in a metallic format, the other a standard non-metallic format. The contrast and effect is simply stunning.
